Artist Statement
In an exploration of the female identity, I engage in a multidisciplinary practice to reveal the beauty and struggles of contemporary society from my distinctive perspective as an LGBTQ+ woman of color. In sharing my stories, through the development of my visual language and reinterpretation of naturalism, I seek to encourage others whose voices have been stifled to share their unique experiences.
My signature style revolves around a contemporary form of expressionism. In a diverse practice existing at the intersection of gestural abstraction and relief sculpture, I create playful depictions of the female form. I specifically harness the evocative qualities of geometric expressionism and the gestural nature of abstract expressionism as I bring my subjects into being. However, my works are not a complete rejection of figuration, but a reimagining of the physical world and human form through a lens of emotion.
As I delve deeper into my practice, I have begun examining the intangible elements of the female experience, the psychological and mental health battles that burden us. These evolutions have led to a current series about the impact of body dysmorphia on the female psyche. The series, rooted in my challenges, parallels my journey as I was forced to reconcile my perception of myself in relation to the space around me. I needed to overcome the inability to recognize myself in the wake of these new physical changes. The figure studies act as a reclamation of the relationship I have with my body. I depict what I perceive as flaws, and understand femininity in all its forms. The vibrant kaleidoscopic color palettes expose each evolution of my mood, sensation, and acceptance.
